Use familiar headings and one reading order
Experience, Projects, Skills, and Education are easy to understand. Keep the document in one column so dates, companies, and bullet points appear in the same order a person reads them.
Use normal text for contact details and links
Write your email address, phone number, LinkedIn, GitHub, and portfolio as readable text. Test every link in the exported PDF and use short display labels instead of long raw URLs.
Make skills and keywords relevant
Use skills that genuinely match the target role and prove important ones through experience or project bullets. Repeating a keyword without evidence does not make a resume stronger.
Verify the PDF text layer
Open the exported PDF, select a paragraph, and paste it into a plain-text editor. If the copied text is missing, scrambled, or out of order, simplify the layout before applying with it.
Run a final application checklist
Check the filename, spelling, dates, links, and page count. Then compare the resume to the job description and make sure the most relevant truthful evidence is easy to find near the top.
Frequently asked questions
Are Overleaf resumes ATS-friendly?
They can be. Compatibility depends on the exported PDF structure and content, not the editor alone. A simple single-column layout is a reliable starting point.
Should I add icons to an ATS-friendly resume?
Avoid relying on icons for phone numbers, email addresses, links, or headings. Plain text is clearer for both people and software.
How do I know whether my PDF text is selectable?
Try selecting and copying several lines from the PDF into a plain-text editor. Review the pasted text for missing characters and incorrect reading order.
