Recommended section order

Use Contact, Summary, Experience, Projects, Skills, and Education. Move Projects above Experience only when you are early career and the projects are your most relevant proof of work.

Write engineering bullets with evidence

Name the system or feature, explain what you changed, and quantify the result when you can. Describe a latency reduction, deployment-frequency improvement, reliability result, cost reduction, or user impact, not just a responsibility.

Tailor the template for each role

Mirror the job description’s legitimate vocabulary. Backend candidates may emphasize APIs, databases, observability, and distributed systems; frontend candidates may emphasize accessibility, performance, and design systems. Only include skills you can defend in an interview.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page is a useful default for most early and mid-career candidates. Add a second page only when you have enough relevant experience to justify it.

Should software engineers include projects?

Yes, especially when they demonstrate a skill or domain that is not established by work experience. Prefer a small number of projects with clear ownership and results.
